Why concrete work in OKC isn't a generic job
In most of the country, concrete has one distress story. Oklahoma City homeowners deal with two independent ones stacked on top of each other, plus a third that shows up during storm season.
- The ground moves underneath the slab. OKC's residential subgrade is dominated by Kirkland, Renfrow, and Renthin soils, vertic-intergrade prairie clays formed on Permian red beds, measured at 40 to 60 percent clay with a shrink-swell rating (linear extensibility) as high as 17 in the highest points measured, and documented slickensides and cracks 5 millimeters or wider through 30 centimeters of soil. That clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry, and because moisture is never even across a yard, the movement is differential. That differential movement is what cracks, heaves, and faults driveways, patios, and walks. The counter-move is base prep and joint spacing done correctly before the pour, not a patch after the fact.
- The surface takes a second kind of damage OKC's clay-only neighbors to the south never see. Oklahoma City averages roughly 72 nights a year at or below freezing. Water sitting in concrete's pores and on saturated slab surfaces freezes and expands repeatedly across a winter, and that cycling drives surface scaling, joint and edge spalling, and D-cracking, a cold-climate deterioration mode that a Gulf Coast market's concrete simply cannot develop. It's also the reason a freeze-thaw exposure spec exists in the concrete code at all (more below).
- Hail is a secondary risk to fresh and decorative work. Oklahoma County sits in the core of "hail alley": 383 hail events recorded over 2015–2025, in every one of those eleven years, including reports up to 4.0 inches. Large hail can pit and crack fresh, stamped, or decorative flatwork, and can spall a cured surface. It's a distant third to the clay and freeze-thaw drivers above, but a real one during storm season.
A concrete job in Oklahoma City has to answer to the clay from below and the winter from above, with hail as an occasional third variable. A bid that only addresses one of those is scoping half the job.
